The Copper plate that is used here is called „The Twelve Apostles“. It is a sugar lift etching, where the plants where drawn with a Japanese brush and a sugar solution onto a degreased copper plate. The plate is covered with an acid free lacquer and then immersed in a hot water bath. Thus the sugar drawing dissolves and breaks away the lacquer. Now the plate can be placed in the acid bath where the acid bites in the marked areas. The copper plate is etched very deeply to create a deep groove. Here, the oil based ink is rubbed in and printed onto a fine acid free rag paper. The curry-coloured background is later applied with a rubber roller and transparent ink. The name „The Twelve Apostles“ gives reverence to the importance plants had and have for all life on earth. In the close up one can see the nice work the acid did to the copper.
